Is a Gender-Bending Cartoon Hero OK?

The latest superhero kids can root for has girl power—at least when he is not living the life of a 12-year-old boy.

American TV viewers on Saturday were able to flip to the premiere episode of SheZow on The Hub network (the network currently has the full premiere on its website).

The premise of the show, according to its page on the cable channel website: “Twelve-year-old Guy is an extreme dude who inherits the power ring of his deceased aunt—the amazing superhero SheZow! The ring gives him villain-battling super powers, but was meant to be worn by a girl and the result is absolutely she-larious!”

The cartoon is on a network that primarily targets to kids ages 2 to 11, according to a recent Los Angeles Times report.

What do you think of this cartoon’s premise? Will you let your kids watch it, or have you let them watch it already? Should this cartoon be on a network targeted to young children?

Police lights.

A woman who was found unresponsive in Lake Allatoona is fighting for her life at an area hospital.

Cherokee County dispatchers received a call around 1 p.m. Tuesday that a woman was discovered floating in the lake in an area along McCurley Road in the southwest part of the county.

McCurley Road is located off Kellogg Creek Road.

Robin Hill, spokeswoman with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, said the woman, 57, was swimming in the lake with friends.

Hill said when her friends looked around for her, they saw her floating in the lake.

Tim Cavender, spokesman for County Fire and Emergency Services, said when first responders arrived onto the scene, the woman had already been pulled from the lake by family or friends and they'd already started CPR on her.

He said the area was "difficult" to get into due to the gate being locked and a vehicle blocking the entrance point.

"We sent our boat to the scene in order to get her to an ambulance," he added.

Cherokee Sheriff's Office Spokesman Lt. Jay Baker said the woman was transported to WellStar Kennestone Hospital in serious condition.

Cavender added that as of Tuesday afternoon, the woman was still alive at the Marietta hospital.

The reborn Canton Fire Services Committee met Tuesday evening to determine what the city's mission should be in regards to this contentious issue.

Councilman Glen Cummins, who heads up the committee, said that he felt the mission should be to, "provide quality fire and EMS services at a reasonable cost."

The committee, which included Cummins, Mayor Gene Hobgood, City Manager Scott Wood, and Councilmen Jack Goodwin and Hooky Huffman, will also feature two non-voting citizen members. They are Dan Casey, a resident of Laurel Canyon, and Clay Cowley, whose experience working for the Woodstock Fire Department makes him an impartial expert on the challenges the city is facing.

Local resident John Rust, who is running for the Canton City Council in November, was also in attendance.

The committee is considering various fire service options, including merger with Cherokee Fire and Emergency Services and having the city "go it alone" to improve the fire situation in the city.

"We need this city to have a fire department for the city to grow after you're gone and I'm gone," Huffman said. "I am here for the city."

Amputee Outdoors Founder: Nothing's Impossible for Wounded Veterans

What's Your Mountain, Orlando?

About this sponsorship: In honor of the 60thanniversary of Sir Edmund Hillary’s historic ascent of Mount Everest, Patch and Grape-Nuts are teaming up to highlight those who inspire people around them to climb their own mountains.

In June of 2011, Michael Boucher of Bogart, GA, was serving his second tour of Afghanistan, with the Marines’  2nd combat Engineer Battalion, when he lost both legs above the knees. The man who grew up hunting and fishing, who loved to be outdoors, had to learn to walk again, with the help of prosthetic legs. While recovering, he met fellow amputee Tony Mullis, and they were able to take part in fishing and hunting trips organized by Walter Reed National Military Medical Cneter. That led to the men founding their own nonprofit to help other amputees have similar experiences and to help them regain confidence and a sense of normalcy.

Here, Boucher talks about the challenge of learning to walk with a prosthetic and about his and Mullis' organization, Amputee Outdoors.

Q: What’s the biggest challenge you’ve ever faced?

A: The biggest challenge I have faced to date was learning to walk again. There were two aspects that were the most difficult. The first was learning to put my whole trust in something that’s manmade and my brain has no ties to it. I had to learn to trust wholeheartedly that the prosthetic was going to be there for me. The second was getting my legs adapted to that sort of pressure and getting them used to the sockets of the prosthetic.

It’s as much mental as it is physical. You have to have that mental ability to push through.

Q: How did you overcome this challenge?

A: I had awesome support from my community and my family. It wasn’t just for myself I was trying to learn to walk, it was for everyone who supported me.  As long as you push through it, there will be a better time on the other end. My desire was not to let something ruin the rest of my life. Persistence pays off, and you can overcome anything as long as you put your mind to it.

Q: You were obviously successful, and then founded Amputee Outdoors to help others.

A: The whole idea is to get those wounded vets out and show them: Your life’s not over, you have to learn new ways to do old things. It’s giving back to individuals who have given so much and are maybe struggling with everyday life, not knowing what the rest of their lives will be like.

Amputee Outdoors is doing well. We now have three tank chairs, which are wheel chairs with tank tracks. We’ve applied for our 501(c)3 nonprofit status, so we can get tax breaks for those who donate.  We are planning a fishing tournament, and all proceeds will go to Amputee Outdoors. We are going to help as many as possible.

Mayor Vetoes Fire Services Study

$

Mayor Gene Hobgood is seeking a second term in office.

The Canton City Council will hear Mayor Gene Hobgood's reasons behind his May 26 veto of the proposed fire services fuding feasibility study budget amendment during their Thursday evening meeting.

Councilman Bob Rush had suggested that the city pay Ecological Planning Group $15,000 to perform the study, seeing as they had done similar work for Garden City, GA. If approved, the study would have presented the council with several different funding options for the city's fire services and looked at some different fire service options.

This study will have to wait, says Hobgood, because the City of Canton is only 1.6 points away from an ISO rating of Class 3, which would put the city's fire department in the top four percent of all local departments in the country.

"[T]here was no longer any urgency regarding a quick decision as to the overall improvement of our fire service," Hobgood wrote in his mayoral veto explanation.

The mayor would like to see the recently-appointed Fire Services Committee, which held its first meeting Tuesday, "immediately investigate the required needs of our fire service to achieve the Class 3 ISO rating, to estimate the Cost and time required to achieve a Class 3 and to determine what if any additional funding is necessary at this time."

Until the city committee has made its recommendations, Hobgood wrote that the proposed fire services feasibility study should not be conducted.

The Canton City Council will also:

  • Discuss whether or not ISO ratings have any bearing on insurance rates. During the May 23 mayoral town hall, Councilman Glen Cummins said he would present studies that show that ISO ratings do not affect insurance rates.
  • Discuss the contentious issue of compensation for the mayor and council. Hobgood has gone on record that he will not vote himself a pay raise, but the majority of the council believes that with the ending of the generous pension plan for council members that there needs to be more financial incentive for people to run for office.
  • Get an update on Etowah River Park from Councilman John Beresford.
  • Get an update on unincorporated islands within the city from Rush.
  • Discuss appointing Downtown Development Authority Committee members to replace Zack Kell, Rebecca Johnston, Stan Rogers, and Doug Key.
  • Discuss and possibly act on a budget amendment that would allow the city to purchase a truck.

Please see the attached agenda and mayoral veto for more information on Thursday's meeting.

The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. at Canton City Hall. Canton-Sixes Patch will carry a live stream of the meeting for those who are unable to attend the meeting in person.

Sign of the times: Starbucks has banned smoking at all stores.

Starbucks across the nation are now smoke-free inside and out.

The company has banned smoking in Starbucks coffee shops, the outdoor patios and within 25 feet of the doors, according to a company statement.

Good idea? Bad idea? What do you think?

According to The Huffington Post, the ban will affect about 7,000 stores across the U.S. — both those that have outdoor seating and those that do not.

"We apologize for any inconvenience but we are complying with many current and future regulations," was the explanation that is printed on cards at Starbucks stores.

The company's transition to a completely smoke-free environment could be a radical change for some regulars used to sitting at the outdoor cafe tables to smoke, drink coffee, work on laptops and socialize.

Are you for or against the smoking ban at Starbucks? Tell us what your thoughts are in the comments.
