Report: Paulding Juvenile Facility Has High Rate of Sexual Misconduct

A federal report released Thursday identified 13 juvenile facilities with high rates of sexual victimization, and the Paulding County Regional Youth Detention Center was at the top of the list.

federal report released Thursday identified 13 juvenile facilities with high rates of sexual victimization, and the Paulding County Regional Youth Detention Center was at the top of the list.

Data from the 2012 National Survey of Youth in Custody found that 32.1 percent of Paulding juveniles reported that they were victimized sexually by either staff or other juveniles at the center.

That exceeded the national rate of 9.5 percent, according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics.

Paulding can house up to 100 juvenile offenders from Paulding, Carroll, Cherokee, Coweta, Douglas, Haralson and Heard counties.

Paulding also had the highest rate of staff-on-youth sexual victimization (31 percent). About 7.1 percent of respondents said the staff sexual misconduct was the result of force or other forms of coercion.

The survey was conducted between February and September 2012 in 273 state-owned or operated juvenile facilities and 53 locally or privately operated facilities that held adjudicated youth under state contract, according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics. The survey limited reporting by youth to incidents that occurred in the last 12 months or since their admission to the facility, if less than 12 months.

Responses to the survey, mandated by the Prison Rape Elimination Act, were anonymous.

The Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice was ranked as one of four states with an overall sexual victimization rate that exceeded 15 percent. Illinois, Ohio, and South Carolina were the others. Sexual victimization was defined in the survey as any unwanted sexual activity between youth and all sexual activity between youth and staff.

Three other Georgia facilities, the Eastman Youth Development Campus in Dodge County, the Augusta Youth Development Campus in Richmond County and the Sumter Youth Development Campus in Americus, joined Paulding on the list of 13 juvenile facilities with high rates of sexual victimization.

Set a Budget for Summer Activities

School is out, which for most families means more going out, financing summer camps and paying for vacation, all of which puts a strain on wallets.

“Summer is a lot like the holidays when we see a jump in consumer spending,” says Mechel Glass, vice president of community outreach for CredAbility, a nonprofit credit counseling agency.  “People naturally want to treat themselves and their families and have some fun, and they should as long as it doesn’t set them back financially,” he advises in a press release.

CredAbility offers these tips for sticking to a financial plan while still having some fun in the sun:

  • Set aside a manageable amount of "summer fun" cash each week. Consider allotting an amount to each child in the family. When it runs out, it runs out. The same goes for your older children, especially if they don’t have a summer job.  Starting a family "tip jar" for loose change can also help build up those summer fun reserves.
  • Involve your kids in establishing a weekly or monthly budget and what they can earn through chores and then use toward getting things they want. This is a good habit and practice for your children to get accustomed to, and the earlier you start, the better.
  • Refrain from using your credit card. It’s easy to get out the credit card when you don’t have cash on hand. Consider putting it away for the summer. And be on the lookout for credit card promotional offers over the summer. While incentives such as earning points for travel and more are enticing, it might not be the right time to open up another credit card right now. Keep paying balances in full over these next few months, too.
  • Seek out fun and cost-saving alternatives. Swap DVDs with other families or check out some from the library; get your children involved in volunteer projects; find free family events that include treats for kids. Seek out deals on dining and fun experiences through sites such as Groupon and Living Social.
  • Plan ahead. It’s a simple concept or reminder that can go a long way toward savings. The more you plan ahead, from dinners to fun experiences and excursions, the less risk you have of letting too many spontaneous and cost-related events pop up. Planning meals for the week, for example, can reduce the temptation of getting fast food or ordering pizza. Also consider dropping junk food and sodas for the summer – you save and boost your health at the same time.

For credit counseling and more money-saving tips, visit www.CredAbility.org.

MOVIE REVIEWS: 'The Internship' Doesn't Work Hard Enough

$

Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson play downsized salesman who manage to snag internships at Google.

"The Internship" is rated PG-13 and runs one hour and 59 minutes. It is now playing at Carmike Riverstone 15 Cinemas in Canton. For more theater information, show times and pricing, click the link above.

Here's what the critics are saying:

A lot of the film is devoted to showing how the cult of technology and the human element don't need to be opposed; they can, and should, work hand in hand. That’s a nice message (and it’s certainly a swell advertisement for Google), but it’s not a funny message. "The Internship" gets so caught up in healing the generational divide that it’s ostensibly about — the analog dudes vs. the digital kids — that the movie ends up being just a pleasant collection of mild laughs. — Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly

Not all of it is bad. There are some scenes that live up to the promising initial premise — middle aged men discovering the perks and setbacks of the new digital economy. . . Many of Vaughn and Wilson's riff-offs with one another — a lot of them improvised — are as amusing ever, as when they dance around Google's unconventional interview questions. . . Yet, for the most part all the Google-touting weighs down an already flimsy storyline. — Tierney Sneed, U.S. News & World Report

Not since the odd 1988 boy-meets-alien flop "Mac and Me" has there been a film as egregiously built around product placement as "The Internship." While "Mac and Me" gratuitously gobbled up McDonalds, it wasn’t actually about the golden arches. But "The Internship," on the other hand, is all about Google, possibly de-throning that silly E.T. rip-off as the king of product placement. — Justin Craig, FoxNews.com

"The Social Network" it isn’t — nor does it try to be — but this big-hearted underdog comedy from director Shawn Levy is, much like its two leads, exceedingly affable and good-natured despite being undeniably long in the tooth. — Scott Foundas, Variety

Canton Man in Prescription Drug Ring Sentenced

One Iowa's Donna Red Wing blogs about why courts are important.

Thirteen people, including a Canton man, were sentenced to prison Monday for their roles in a prescription drug distribution ring that involved more than 30,000 oxycodone pills.

"These defendants exhibited total disregard for how their pill peddling could destroy lives," United States Attorney Sally Quillian Yates said in a statement. "This prescription drug can be deadly when not taken under proper medical oversight. Such brazen forging of prescriptions should serve as a reminder that some in our society will go to any length for illicit gain."

Kristen Noelle Goduto of Marietta allegedly manufactured prescriptions for oxycodone and recruited others to pass the forged prescriptions throughout the Northern District of Georgia, said Robert Page, the spokesman for Yates' office.

"The prescriptions would appear legitimate and would often pass through pharmacies because Goduto would either replace the doctor’s office number with her cellular telephone number, so she could falsely verify that the prescription was legitimate, or she kept the doctor’s true number, but either had the prescriptions passed on nights or weekends (when the doctor’s office was closed)," Page said.

Goduto, 29, was sentenced to 14 years in prison, which will be followed by five years of supervised release.

Others sentenced today included:

  • Kory Joseph Goduto, 32, of Marietta. Goduto was sentenced to 11 years, eight months in prison to be followed by three years of supervised release.
  • Pasquale Peter Goduto, 62, of Marietta. Goduto was sentenced to three years of probation.
  • Mark James O’Brien, 36, of Marietta. O’Brien was sentenced to five years, three months in prison to be followed by three years of supervised release.
  • Lori Rene Anderson, 34, of Acworth. Anderson was sentenced to three years of probation, including one year of home confinement.
  • Georgia Ann Hulsey, 33, of Marietta. Hulsey was sentenced to time served in prison to be followed by three years of supervised release.
  • Phillip David Hobbs, 40, of Canton. Hobbs was sentenced to time served in prison to be followed by three years of supervised release.
  • David Lee Tanner, 34, of Acworth. Tanner was sentenced to time served in prison to be followed by three years of supervised release.
  • Ryan Patrick Trento, 27, of Marietta. Trento was sentenced to three years in prison to be followed by three years of supervised release.
  • Justin Howard, 30, of Braselton. Howard was sentenced to three years of probation.
  • Ajian Martine Greene, 29, of Sandy Springs. Greene was sentenced to five years in prison to be followed by five years of supervised release.
  • Terry Randy Wallace, 24, of Newnan. Wallace was sentenced to three years of probation.
  • Carl Clifton Lewis, 25, of Conyers. Lewis was sentenced to time served in prison to be followed by two months in a halfway house and three years of supervised release.

Before today's sentencing, the defendants had pleaded guilty to the charges, Page said.

Authorities with the Cartersville Police Department, the Cherokee Muli-Agency Narcotics Squad, the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office, the Smyrna Police Department, the Bartow County Sheriff’s Office and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office assisted the Drug Enforcement Administration with the investigation.

Is daily life really so tough?

Well, yes, it can be.

Here, though, is to keeping things in perspective. For several weeks, Patch and Grape-Nuts teamed up to present stories about your neighbors – neighbors who have faced challenges that would seem insurmountable to many of us.

But not to the people we've featured in this series, Journeys.

Not surprisingly, the stories have generated dozens of comments on Patch and on Facebook: "Great story...""Thanks for sharing..." "So wonderfully inspiring..."

And, so, here they are again. Great stories shared to inspire. Take a look at what these people have faced. Then click on the story to see their responses. And, feel better about things.

Kim Gokce of Brookhaven, GA, is chairman and founder of an advocacy group for the new city’s only high school, Cross Keys High School, an old institution that Gocke’s group is helping to renovate. Despite its challenges (many students are learning English as a second language and live at or below the poverty level), Cross Keys students reach high academic scores, and many are able to attend some of the nation's top schools.

Brian Maloof is lightning quick to point out that he’s not changing the world in the way that Sir Hillary did. But as the owner of Atlanta landmark Manuel’s Tavern, Maloof is making a big difference in the lives of quite a few people in his hometown. He is well-known for giving back to the poor and homeless in his neighborhood, and for helping ex-convicts re-enter society by giving them employment.

In May 2012, Aimee Copeland of Snellville, GA., had just completed her core courses for a master’s degree in psychology when she fell into a creek and cut her leg in an accident involving a homemade zip-line. The wound was infected with typically fatal flesh-eating bacteria in the accident, and Aimee lost her left leg, her right foot and both hands. But she did not lose her spirit.

In June of 2011, Michael Boucher of Bogart, GA, was serving his second tour of Afghanistan, with the Marines’  2nd combat Engineer Battalion, when he lost both legs above the knees. The man who grew up hunting and fishing, who loved to be outdoors, had to learn to walk again, with the help of prosthetic legs. While recovering, he met fellow amputee Tony Mullis and together they founded their own nonprofit to help other amputees regain confidence and a sense of normalcy.

When he was only 13, Shaun Verma, a high school senior, founded the nonprofit MDJunior, an organization that brings together health-care professionals and students to nurture a mentoring relationship. MDJunior focuses on underserved communities and developing countries. In 2012, MDJunior was awarded special recognition by the President's Council on Service & Civic Participation.

Scott Rigsby has, without a doubt, “run with perseverance the race marked out” for him, as the Bible says. In 2007 Rigsby became the first double amputee to finish the Ironman World Championship triathlon in Kailua-Kona, HI. After his story was viewed by millions, he became a motivational speaker and created The Scott Rigsby Foundation, a nonprofit organization "dedicated to inspire, inform and enable individuals with loss of limb or mobility to live a healthy, active lifestyle."

Laura Whitaker is the executive director of Extra Special People, a nonprofit in Watkinsville, GA, that enhances the lives of children with disabilities by offering them recreation, education and socialization. Whitaker has been the executive director of ESP since 2006, and was only 21 when she took on the job. Under her leadership, the nonprofit provides after-school care and family counseling for more than 150 children throughout 10 counties in Northeast Georgia.

Boy's Patriotic Improv Goes Viral; 4.5 Million+ YouTube Views

Millions and millions of people have been watching a junior high school gymnasium video on YouTube this week after one eighth-grader's quick-thinking response to disaster turned a "fail" into a heartwarming patriotic display.

At the Eisenhower Junior High School Red/White Concert on the evening of Saturday, May 18, cymbal player Andrew Pawelczyk, 13, was performing the national anthem when the strap on his right cymbal broke and the instrument went clattering to the gym floor.

After a moment's confusion—spoiler alert, you should really watch above first—Pawelczyk turned to the color guard and saluted the American flag as his bandmates finished the anthem.

"I was just shocked," Pawelczyk told the Chicago Tribune. "I thought in my head, 'Should I run and get another one?' I decided to salute the flag."

When footage hit YouTube, his split-second decision won him viral-video fame, with the clip being shared on every corner of the Internet. The video earned a spot in a Jimmy Fallon monologue on "Late Night." Pawelczyk sat for a WGN interview that can be seen here on the Huffington Post.

And the accolades for Pawelczyk's salute can be found across the Internet. Just one example: "This is how you recover from an embarrassing moment!" news site Gawker tweeted, calling it "graceful," a "beautiful recovery" and a "master class in recovery from embarrassment."
