MOVIE REVIEWS: 'Now You See Me' Not Very Magical

$

Watch a trailer for the film "Now You See Me."

"Now You See Me" pits illusionists against the FBI in a heist movie starring Jesse Eisenberg, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, Mark Ruffalo, Woody Harrelson and Isla Fisher.

"Now You See Me" is rated PG-13 and runs one hour and 56 minutes. It is now playing at Carmike Riverstone 15 Cinemas in Canton. For more theater information, show times and pricing, click the link above.

Here's what the critics are saying:

There's little magic to be had from watching "Now You See Me," a splashy, noisy and frankly preposterous action caper about a quartet of illusionists with a Robin Hood complex. For all the talent up on the screen — and one can't fault the performances — the movie just doesn't deliver. — Gary Goldstein, LA Times

The problem is that, in focusing on what makes a good caper, director Louis Leterrier forgot about what makes a good movie: character development, carefully constructed tension and believable plot points. — Stephanie Merry, The Washington Post

It's all about the game, the tricks, with no deeper context or involving motivation other than a vaguely stated impulse for Robin Hood-ish redistribution of wealth. — Todd McCarthy, The Hollywood Reporter

At times, "Now You See Me" suggests Christopher Nolan's "The Prestige" made with a throwaway wink. The actors . . . look like they're having so much fun that you can forgive the periodic arbitrariness of it all. — Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly

Cagle: Cherokee is a "Real Player" in Economic Success

Cherokee County Sheriff Roger Garrison (left) speaks with Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle (center) and Sen. Brandon Beach of Alpharetta about the new training center under construction in Canton.

Georgia Lieutenant Gov. Casey Cagle had nothing but praise for Cherokee County as he and State Sen. Brandon Beach made a brief stop in the county on Thursday.

Cagle joined Beach on a tour of Georgia Senate District 21, which includes Cherokee, and also toured the Sheriff Roger Garrison Law Enforcement Training Center under construction in Canton.

Cagle said Cherokee is seeing a "tremendous amount of growth and success," and is becoming a "real player" in ensuring the state is prosperous in the future.

Cagle also praised Beach for his willingness to help his constituents.

In turn, the state senator lauded Cagle, who he said is "all about jobs," for his desire to see the state succeed.

He also praised Cherokee for its high performing school systems, and noted the Cherokee County Regional Airport and its easy access to Interstate 575 will contribute to the county's growth.

The training center is being built by Catamount Constructors Inc. of Roswell for $2.8 million. The state of Georgia has agreed to kick in an additional $700,000 in funding towards the project.

The project includes a main building, which contains about 11,000 square feet of classroom space and sections for other training purposes, a roughly 6,600-square-foot shoot house and an outdoor shooting range.

The Cherokee County Commission last week approved a proclamation naming the center after Garrison.

MOVIE REVIEWS: 'After Earth' Crash Lands

$

Father-son duo Will and Jaden Smith must mend their relationship to survive after crash-landing on an abandoned Earth in the futuristic "After Earth" directed by M. Night Shyamalan.

"After Earth" is rated PG-13 and runs one hour and 39 minutes. It is now playing at Carmike Riverstone 15 Cinemas in Canton. For more theater information, show times and pricing, click the link above.

Here's what the critics are saying:

The movie takes off from a concept as basic as a videogame, and it sticks to that concept, without surprise. — Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly

The disappointingly generic film, which strands a father and son on Earth a thousand years after a planet-wide evacuation, will leave genre audiences pining for the more Terra-centric conceits of "Oblivion," not to mention countless other future-set films that find novelty in making familiar surroundings threatening. — John DeFore, The Hollywood Reporter

You can’t blame Will Smith for wanting to give his son a leg up in the business. Maybe one day Jaden will have his father’s career — and his ability to carry a movie. For now, it’s a little premature to ask him to bear the weight of this soggy, waterlogged “Earth” on his skinny shoulders. — Michael O'Sullivan, The Washington Post

There is no small irony that this sci-fi action adventure is about surviving a serious crash. The scorched earth left behind by "After Earth" is sure to leave a scar on everyone involved. — Betsy Sharkey, LA Times

James Logan Ketchum, 17, has been charged with charged with 3 counts of Entering Auto, Possession of Marijuana less than 1 Ounce, Driving with no License and Theft of a Motor Vehicle.

Two teenagers have been arrested for allegedly taking items from unsecured vehicles in one of Cherokee County's largest subdivisions.

Cherokee Sheriff's Office deputies have arrested Canton residents Shaquille Oneal Webb, 18 years old and James Logan Ketchum, 17, after they were caught allegedly taking items from vehicles in the BridgeMill neighborhood.

According to a press release from the agency, Webb has been charged with 2 counts of entering auto, possession of marijuana less than 1 ounce and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Ketchum was charged with charged with 3 counts of entering auto, possession of marijuana less than 1 ounce, driving with no license and theft of a motor vehicle. He also face charges stemming from an entering auto incident that happened Friday night in the same neighborhood.

A 15-year-old who was in the car at the time of the arrests was not charged and was released to a guardian.

Both Webb and Ketchum remain behind bars at the Cherokee County Adult Detention Center. Webb currently has a $7,335 bond while Ketchum received a $19,410 bond.

At around 2 a.m. Monday, deputies were dispatched to the neighborhood on the entering auto call, which was already in progress. Cherokee County E-911 told deputies a BridgeMill resident saw the teens enter the cars and their spouse was following the suspects in their vehicle.

Deputies were able to locate the suspect and conducted a traffic stop inside the neighborhood.

Small electronics and cash were recovered by deputies, all of which were taken from unlocked vehicles in BridgeMill.

"Residents are urged to lock the vehicles at all times when not occupied," said Spokesman Lt. Jay Baker in the press release. "Almost all thefts from vehicles occur from cars that simply were not locked."

Cherokee deputies have discovered at least three victims in the case, but that could rise.

The Cherokee Sheriff's Office also urges residents to call 911 if they see or hear anything unusual outside or see thefts in action.

Some workplaces have strange initiation rituals and hazing rites, but how would you like it if you got shot with a taser within an hour of being hired?

That shocking fate befell recently-hired Canton Police Department Officer McPherson was attending taser certification classes on his first day of duty when he was put in front of the device to receive a jolt.

He was not alone in his shocking experience, as he was joined in the unpleasant feeling of having electricity course through yout body by Officer Moss.

It was all in good fun, and served a purpose: these two officers, and any other officers who are on the receiving end of a taser, now have first hand experience with the device and will be better suited to use the device in situations that may call for it.

Cherokee County Will Commit $225,000 for New Senior Development

$
0
0

The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners is set to approve a $225,000 commitment of HOME Program funds to the construction of a new rental development geared towards low-income seniors.

The Commissioners will vote on whether or not to approve the commitment during their 6 p.m. meeting, which will follow their 3 p.m. work session. Both events will be held at the county's administrative building in Canton.

The Hardwick Commons development, which will be built at 401 Marietta Hwy. in Canton, will contain 74 units. The community will consist of a single building with multiple floors. Outside the building, the site will feature a swimming pool and garden area. Additionally, the development will boast meeting areas on each floor, a business center, and a community room.

In order for the developers to attain the HOME funds, they must receive a Low Income Housing Tax Credit from the Department of Community Affairs. The county expects to recoup its HOME Program funds once the tax credit funds are exhausted.

The developers, Wendover Housing Partners, LLC, are asking for $8,451,655 in tax credit funds and are requesting that two percent of the project, or $225,000, be paid for by HOME Project funds. Currently, the county has almost $400,000 in HOME Project money available to be spent. Wendover is prepared to match 50% of the HOME funds committed to this project.

Wendover has built over 5,000 income housing tax credit units in Florida, Georgia, and Texas.

According to a timetable provided to the county, construction should begin in December of this year, with an estimated completion date of late fall 2014.

The commissioners will also:

  • Approve a $10,000 increase in the Animal Shelter's Budget. The money was bequeathed to the shelter by the Mary Jean Payne Charitable Trust.
  • Consider purchasing roughly 1.86 acres of land at North Industrial Way south of Univeter Road for $125,000.
  • Consider approving an automatic aid agreement with Pickens County for supplemental fire suppression and joint training exercises.
  • Award a $35,046 purchase order to Contech Engineering Solutions for 284 linear feet of corrugated aluminium alloy pipe for the road work on Roscoe Collett Road.
