Northside Hospital-Cherokee Adds Cardiac Cath Suite

Northside Hospital-Cherokee's second suite for its state-of-the-art cardiac catheterization and interventional radiology lab was opened on May 15.

Since the first suite opened in 2007, the Canton hospital has seen roughly 1,000 cardiac catheterization and interventional radiology procedures performed a year. Northside Hospital-Cherokee is the only provider of these services in Cherokee County.

"With the additional room, not only will we be able to accommodate a higher volume of patients, but we also can offer more scheduling flexibility for both patients and physicians, which will better serve our community," said Angela Edgar, RN, MS, CCRN-CMC, RCIS, manager of cardiology services, Northside Hospital-Cherokee.

The cath lab, as it is called, allows doctors to use catheters to perform a minimally-invasive procedure to determine the presence of blockages in the heart and coronary arteries.

Interventional radiology is used by specialist radiologists to look inside patients' bodies while guiding a catheter through blood vessels and other body passageways.

Doctors can also use the cath lab to perform angioplasties, implantation of pacemakers and internal defibrillators, and other heart-related procedures.

Rulers of the Cherokee County School District Transportation Department annual School Bus Road-E-O this year are, from left, Jim Genet, third place; Mary Stout, center, second place; and Christine Minter, right, first place.

Bus drivers with the Cherokee County School District Transportation Department battled against one another to determine the winner of the county's 2013 Road-E-O on May 6.

The Road-E-O consists of a bus safety check, followed by a challenging obstacle course designed to test drivers' abilities to safely but expertly handle their machines.

22 bus drivers competed in the 2013 Road-E-O, and performed maneuvers such as serpentines, parallel parking, offset alley exercises and diminishing clearance and stopping maneuvers.

A steady downpour of rain may have made driving more difficult, but it didn't deter the drivers from doing their utmost to show off their skills.

Christine Minter won first place in the Cherokee Road-E-O, while Mary Stout took home second place honors and Jim Genet took third place.

Minter and Stout will move on to the state Road-E-O, which will be held in June.

Donating blood (FILE PHOTO)

Canton residents who want to donate blood but must work an appointment time around their busy schedules have several options for donations next month.

The American Red Cross is hosting five blood drives in June, at locations such as the Bluffs Conference Center and Northside Hospital-Cherokee.

Below is the list of June blood drives for Cherokee County. To schedule an appointment, go to redcrossblood.org and enter the appropriate sponsor code for the blood drive you'd like to participate in.

Donations at drives such as these are especially crucial during the summer months, says Red Cross Donor Recruitment Representative Sandy Buffington.

Buffington told Patch that due to schools being out on summer break, the Red Cross' potential donor pool shrinks some, so it needs other donators to help pick up the slack.

To learn more about donating blood, please visit the American Red Cross' website.

Although this is the final term for long-time Cherokee County Sheriff Roger Garrison, that doesn't mean he is resting on his laurels.

Garrison, who is serving his sixth and final term as the county sheriff, will soon become the target of some good natured-ribbing at the 10th Annual Charity Roast for the Malon D. Mimms Boys & Girls Club, which will be held on Sept. 26 at 6:30 p.m. at the Bluffs Conference Center.

"I’m honored to offer myself to help raise these much needed funds for one of the most worthy causes in Cherokee County," said Garrison.

Garrison will be the butt of jokes made by such luminaries as radio personality Rhubarb Jones, GBI Director Vernon Keenan, State Court Judge Alan Gordon, and Lieutenant Governor Casey Cagle. The Master of Ceremonies will be Jamie Bendall, owner of the Punchline Comedy Club.

The roast regularly draws 500 attendees and consists of a cocktail reception, live entertainment, a buffet, and silent auctions. Historically, the event has raised roughly $75,000 a year for the organization.

"The funds raised from the annual Charity Roast help the local Boys & Girls Club offer after school services, leadership development programs and a safe haven for at-risk and disadvantaged youth in our community. By pulling together, we can make a difference." said Cherokee County Manager Jerry Cooper, who is the chairman of the 2013 roast committee.

Tickets for the event cost $75. Community members are also being asked to donate items for auction or to become sponsors of the roast. For further information on purchasing tickets, donating auction items, or becoming a sponsor of the roast, please contact Jerry Cooper at 678-493-6008 or email jcooper@cherokeega.com

What Should Go Above Downtown Kitchen?

$

The Downtown Kitchen at 140 East Marietta St. is one of Canton's most popular dining facilities. Canton-Sixes Patch readers named it their favorite downtown business in the 2012 Readers' Choice Awards.

Recently, the third floor of the building which houses the Downtown Kitchen has opened up for a new tenant. The site boasts off-street parking, which is important in a crowded downtown such as Canton's.

According to CityFeet.com, the open space on the third floor has an area of 1,200 square feet and is set up as an office condominium. There are three large offices and a reception area, which makes the site ideal for professionals such as attorneys or accountants. Rent for the property is $1,200 a month.

What business would you like to see move into the office space above the restaurant? It would definitely see a lot of traffic due to the popularity of the Downtown Kitchen.

Tell us in the comments below what you think about this property, its location and which establishments would be great occupants.

Grant Gober of Canton, arrested on April 3 for burglary.

Canton police detectives have secured arrest warrants for a burglary suspect.

Warrants have been issued for Grant J. Cober of Canton in relation to a May 25 burglary and a false report of crime on May 28.

According to a press release from the Canton Police Department, officers responded to a reported burglary at a home in the 400 block of Cherokee Street.

When officers arrived, they learned a male subject who entered the home encountered an elderly female resident. He had since left the scene and detectives worked with the woman to gather a description of the man, including the clothing he was wearing when she saw him.

Officers then responded to another reported burglary on the same residential block on Cherokee Street on May 28. The person reporting the crime said he was allegedly assaulted by an "unknown male subject found in his home while doing laundry early in the morning," the press release states.

Officers collected evidence and statements and led to police to secure the arrest of Gober. Officers tried to carry out the arrest warrant during the execution of a search warrant at Gober's home, but the suspect was not there.

Pacer Cordry, community outreach officer with the Canton Police Department, noted Gober's attorney said his client plans to turn himself in to authorities, but he hasn't disclosed where Gober is.
