Creekview Beats River Ridge 34-14

Will Kirby (26) picks up big yards.

In the Creekview home opener, the Grizzlies wasted no time outscoring River Ridge 24-0 in the first half. Quarterback Hayden Hall had completions to Will Kirby (No. 26), Hunter Udall (21) and Connor Dulmage (5). On the ground, Isaiah Rogers (27) and Chandler Wold (18) moved the Grizzlies downfield.

The second half continued Creekview's production. With the exception of a third quarter lapse that cost the Grizzlies a touchdown and another score for River Ridge in the second half, Creekview came out with a decisive 34-14 victory.

The Grizzlies have set the tone for the season. Even with some difficult opponents ahead, Creekview has shown that it wants to have a winning season and plans to make a run for post season play.

Catalyst Church settles in new Woodstock location

A grand opening is planned for 10 a.m. Sept. 9 at the church’s new location, 9872 Main Street, Woodstock. Pastor Kevin Ellington said the church started in October 2011 and has met in a home, office and clubhouse before settling into the 8,000-square-foot permanent location.

“I like where we are on Main Street, in a fantastic area where we can do a tremendous amount of ministry,” said Ellington. “Our goal is to improve our community. Everything we do needs to be life-giving; it needs to give life to people and encourage and uplift.”

Community outreach has included a food drive, providing Christmas gifts for families, and a coat drive. Small groups will begin in October. For more information, visit www.catalystonline.tv

Tribune Publisher Brumby Dies

Otis A. Brumby Jr. was publisher of the Cherokee Tribune and the Marietta Daily Journal.

Otis A. Brumby Jr., who served as publisher of the Cherokee Tribune and the Marietta Daily Journal, and also was a member of the Georgia Board of Transportation during a lengthy career in business, journalism and public service, died Saturday at the age of 72.

He had been diagnosed with Stage 4 prostate cancer two years ago, according to an obituary published Saturday evening in his newspaper.

The Tribune obituary said a private burial will be held Wednesday at Dawson Cemetery, followed by an 11 a.m. memorial service at Marietta First United Methodist Church, where Brumby was a longtime member.

Brumby became publisher of the Marietta Daily Journal newspaper just as Cobb experienced its first development boom. His publications chronicled the growth of the area into a suburban powerhouse, with a journalistic foundation based on an advocacy of fiscal conservatism, open government and public education.

“At his core, Otis was a journalist whose first commitment was to open government and protection of the First Amendment, and he did that,” said Georgia Supreme Court Justice Harris Hines, a longtime Cobb resident and Brumby friend, in an obituary published by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

But as Creative Loafing illustrated in a 2001 profile, Brumby's headstrong nature also engendered plenty of animosity from journalists who formerly worked for him and from a number of prominent elected officials, including former Cobb Commission Chairman Bill Byrne.

Newspapers have been in the Brumby family for nearly a century. His father, Otis A. Brumby, Jr., founded the Cobb County Times in 1916 and purchased the MDJ in 1951, according to the MDJ obituary.

After earning a law degree from the University of Georgia, Brumby returned home to Marietta in 1965 to serve as assistant publisher of the MDJ.

In 1969, Brumby added to his media business by creating the Neighbor Newspapers, more than 20 weekly publications located throughout suburban Atlanta.

Brumby's son, Otis A. Brumby III, is the current general manager of the MDJ.

Public officials from Cobb praised Brumby's work in the MDJ remembrance, including his doggedness in holding them accountable. Said former State. Sen. Chuck Clay, a Marietta Republican:

"The people of Georgia have been well served by his efforts. I just hope they know what a legal quorum is in heaven or there is going to be trouble, and I bet on Otis.”

Marietta police patrol car.

A suspect who allegedly robbed a Woodstock convenience store Sunday morning was shot and killed by police on Interstate 75 near the North Marietta Parkway, leaving southbound traffic jammed for most of Sunday afternoon.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution is reporting that the unnamed suspect led Cobb and Cherokee law enforcement on a chase from a Marathon station on Bells Ferry Road in Woodstock and down I-75, to just south of the North Marietta Parkway.

Police stopped the vehicle there, and the suspect aimed his gun at officers, who shot and killed him, according to the AJC report, which was based on a statement issued by the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office.

Southbound I-75 traffic was halted at the North Marietta Parkway around 11 a.m., according to an alert issued by Marietta Police, who warned motorists that the closure would be for "an indefinite period."

Various traffic reports during the I-75 closure indicated the backup went as far north as Kennesaw, five miles away. Only the left shoulder was open for traffic to pass.

Shortly after 5 p.m. Sunday, all lanes were reopened to traffic, but authorities said delays would continue into Sunday evening as the Georgia Bureau of Investigation continued its investigation of the matter.

According to both the AJC and 11 Alive, Woodstock Police got a call about an armed robbery at the Marathon station shortly before 10 a.m. and pursued the suspect southbound on I-575.

The pursuit then entered Cobb and involved law enforcement from both counties as it continued on I-75.

The Cherokee County Health Department's drive-by flu shot clinic, which was held Tuesday in the parking lot of the Woodstock Health Center, drew 152 residents, officials said.

"We are happy with the turn out at the drive-by clinic," said Nancy Stackhouse, Cherokee County Health Immunization Outreach Coordinator and Georgia's 2012 CDC Childhood Immunization Champion. "That's 152 people who are now better prepared to stay healthy this flu season."

About 53 people received the high dose flu shot, which was given to those who were at least 65 years old.

It's not too late to get a shot. If you missed the clinic, all residents are urged to head to the health department's Canton and Woodstock locations for shots, said Denise Bowman, the manager of the Cherokee County Health Department.

The department offers regular seasonal flu vaccines for $20 and the high dose flu shot for $50. Cash, checks, Medicare, Medicaid, State CIGNA and State Healthcare Insurances are accepted.

For more information, contact the Cherokee County Health Department at 770-928-0133 or 770-645-7371.

Patch Poll: Dems Say Convention Gave Obama a Bounce, GOP Less Likely to Think the Events Matter

Democrats overwhelmingly reported feeling more confident about President Barack Obama's chances of winning after both conventions closed.

Patch tapped our panels of influential Democrats and Republicans for twin polls, which were conducted this week.

The results are unscientific.

Democrats and Republicans were polled separately, with people from each party asked to focus on their own presidential candidate's performance and their own party's convention.

Patch received responses from 31 Democrats and 56 Republicans.

Do you have a suggestion for future polls of influential Republicans and Democrats? Tell us in the comments area below this article.
