All six Cherokee County high schools, including Creekview and Cherokee in Canton, are expanding their AP course offerings this upcoming school year.
Creekview, Etowah, River Ridge, Woodstock and Sequoyah are adding new courses thanks to an AP STEM Access grant program, while Cherokee High is increasing its offerings separate from the program.
Some 300 schools across the country were recipients in the grant program, created to increase minority and female students in AP STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) courses.
The additional courses at Cherokee's schools are:
- Cherokee High, AP Physics C
- Creekview High, AP Biology and AP Physics C
- Etowah High, AP Calculus BC and AP Environmental Science
- River Ridge High, AP Calculus BC, AP Chemistry, AP Environmental Science and AP Physics C
- Sequoyah High, AP Computer Science
- Woodstock High, AP Calculus BC
“I was thrilled when invited to be a part of the AP Environmental Science launch at River Ridge High School,” said River Ridge High science teacher Deb Goldberg in a press release from Cherokee Schools.
“Mastery of STEM knowledge is crucial to successful careers in many of the current and emerging fields in the global marketplace, which overall offer the highest pay and strongest job security, and we want all of our students to have the greatest opportunity to succeed in these arenas,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Frank R. Petruzielo added.
