5. On This Date in History: On May 14, 1787, the Constitutional Convention began in Philadelphia. The delegates to the convention worked for more than three months to develop a system of government to replace the Articles of Confederation. On Sept. 17, 1787, the Constitution of the United States was adopted, but it would not be ratified until March 4, 1789.
