On This Date in History: On April 25, 1915, Australian and New Zealand troops landed at Gallipoli, then part of the Ottoman Empire, in an attempt to knock the Turks out of World War I and secure the Black Sea for the Allies. After months of desperate fighting, the Allies retreated, with the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) losing over 10,000 soldiers killed. The brutal struggles at ANZAC Cove, Suvla Bay and Hill 971 gave Australia and New Zealand a national identity, and today April 25 is celebrated as ANZAC Day in those two countries.
