Canton Police Chief Robert Merchant (L) is presented with a plaque recognizing the Canton Police Department's third State of Georgia Law Enforcement Re-Certification by Jefferson Police Department Chief Joseph Wirthman (R), representing the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police (GACP) at Canton City Hall on April 24, 2013.

The Canton Police Department was honored for earning its third State of Georgia Law Enforcement Re-Certification by the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police (GACP) at Canton City Hall on Thursday morning.

The certification process includes a rigorous review of every aspect of an agency's law enforcement capacities, including organization, management, and administration.

This re-certification recognizes that the Canton Police Department has not wavered in its commitment to provide excellent, professional law enforcement services to the City of Canton and others whom it may serve.

"Certification is a coveted award that symbolizes professionalism, excellence and competence," said the department in a statement. "Employees take pride in their agency, knowing that it represents the very best in law enforcement."

Police Chief Robert Merchant also recognized the two officers who worked the hardest to ensure the department was ready for re-certification. Officers Mark Gavala and Don Stewart were presented the Medal of Merit by Merchant during the Thursday presentation.
