5. On This Date in History: On April 24, 1918, a new form of warfare emerged on the crater-scarred Western Front of World War I. Near Villers-Bretonneux, France, three British tanks fought an opposite number from the German Army. Two British tanks were knocked out, but the third managed to disable his opponent and chase off the remaining enemy vehicles before it was disabled by enemy artillery.
