UPDATE (7:05 p.m.): According to the Canton Police Department, the body of the 17-year-old was located by Cherokee County divers and recovered at approximately 5 p.m. Wednesday. Owing to the wishes of the family, the young man's name is not being released.
A Cherokee Fire and EMS release says that the drowning victim and a friend were fishing in the reservoir when he decided to jump into the water for a swim. A few minutes later, the 17-year-old went under and did not resurface.
The Cherokee EMS Dive Team was told that the young man went missing in an area that was about 30 feet from the bank. The water in this part of the reservoir is estimated to be 10 to 20 feet deep. At the time of the incident, the water temperature was estimated to be around 55 degrees.
At 4:30 p.m., the Dive Team entered the water to try to locate the missing man, and found his body at approximately 5 p.m.
The Canton Police Department will continue the investigation of the young man's drowning.
ORIGINAL STORY: The Canton Police Department and Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services are looking for a young man who was struggling in the water at Hickory Log Creek Reservoir.
According to a Canton Police Department release, officers were dispatched to the reservoir, which opened in March, at 1:45 p.m. Wednesday due to a report of a swimmer in distress.
The caller said that he and his friend had been swimming when his friend began to have trouble in the water. The caller tried to help his friend, but had to swim to shore to get help.
After officers located the caller, they began searching for the swimmer. The Canton Marine Patrol, Cherokee Fire and EMS, and the Department of Natural Resources are all currently searching for the man.
The swimmer is described as a 17-year-old white male, 5'8" and weighing 140 lbs. The man has brown hair and blue eyes.
