If you have ever dumped cooking oils or greases down the drain after preparing a meal, you've contributed in a small way to sewer system problems that could lead to backups or overflows onto your street.
The City of Canton Public Works Department is urging residents to properly dispose of used cooking fats, oil or grease (FOG) to avoid the above problems, and prevent other sewer maintenance issues caused by buildup of FOGs in sewer lines.
The Public Works Department operates a FOG recycling program that is designed to take these harmful elements out of the city's sewer lines and put them to work as recycled materials that can help the environment; used cooking oil can be recycled into biodiesel fuel, which the City of Canton uses for its fleet of vehicles.
To properly dispose of used FOGs, follow this procedue:
- Let your used cooking grease cool, then pour it into a container (that is not made of glass) using a funnel.
- Take out the funnel and replace the cap on the container tightly.
- Deliver the container to the City of Canton Public Works Department and pour the contents into the proper receptacle. Citizens can re-use their grease container for all future grease deliveries.
