UPDATE (5:45 p.m.): Canton-Sixes Patch Facebook users who were at the scene of the incident are reporting that the crossing guard struck was directing traffic outside Freedom Middle School, not Liberty Elementary School.

"The crossing guards are there for Freedom MS, not Liberty. I hope the guard is ok and they find who did this. I pass those guards twice a day and know what a good job they do with traffic through there. People need to watch their speed through there during school hours," wrote Natalie Owings Croft.

"I was picking my son up from freedom and seen the buses were not leaving and looked and seen the guard was on the ground," wrote Misty Byess Prasad. "There are two guards who work the freedom middle location one for the parent entrance and another who works the bus entrance...it was the bus entrance guard who was struck."

UPDATE (5:10 p.m.): The Cherokee Sheriff's Office has released new information on the sticker on the back window of the suspect vehicle. It is apparently the stylized T used by the University of Tennessee, and not TN as previously reported.

ORIGINAL STORY: A Liberty Elementary School crossing guard is at Northside Hospital-Cherokee with non-life threatening injuries after being struck by a vehicle whilst directing traffic Tuesday afternoon.

According to the Cherokee Sheriff's Office, the driver of a silver Honda Prelude struck the crossing guard at roughly 3:45 p.m., then fled northbound on Bells Ferry Road. The Prelude has large letters that read "T-N" on the back window.

The suspect driving the vehicle is described as a white male wearing a black shirt, a black hat, and sunglasses.

Anyone who has seen the suspect or the suspect's vehicle is urged to call 911 immediately.
