The Canton City Council will begin its discussion of Mayor Gene Hobgood's proposed "Committee on Canton's Future" during its regularly scheduled meeting on Thursday evening.

The committee, first described by Hobgood during his state of the city address on Feb. 8, would develop and implement a vision for the city that would extend to the year 2050.

Hobgood said he was, “optimistically determined that this year will be a banner year for our city," during his address on Feb. 8. He hopes that the city council, with which he has often had a contentious relationship, would put their differences aside to support the committee.

The council will also discuss the slate of candidates brought forth by Hobgood for all city committees. The city council can reject any candidate and replace him or her with a candidate of their own choosing. The complete slate of candidates can be found here.

Other business the council will discuss is the possible construction of an office at the Hickory Log Creek Reservoir and acting on the contract with Mark Robillard Architects to renovate the area that will become the new council chambers.

The city council will meet at 6 p.m. at City Hall. The entire agenda for the meeting can be found with this article. If you are unable to attend the meeting in person, Canton-Sixes Patch will host a live stream of the meeting starting at 6 p.m.
