The temporary exhibit on the marble industry in Cherokee and Pickens County will be on display through May 15 at the Cherokee County History Museum and Visitors Center in downtown Canton.

The Cherokee County Historical Society has announced plans to display a temporary exhibit on the marble industry in Cherokee and Pickens County.

The exhibit will be on display at the Cherokee County History Museum and Visitors Center.

Due to the large outcropping of marble found in Cherokee and Pickens counties, the marble industry flourished in North Georgia between the 1880's and the 1930's.

The quarry in nearby Tate provided the unfinished product for the dozens of finishing plants in Ball Ground and Canton.

The exhibit will feature photographs, documents and artifacts from the historical society's collection.

A special profile on the prominent marble sculptor, James K. Watt, will also be on display.

The exhibit will feature tools, carved marble pieces, sales catalogues and promotional materials from both The Georgia Marble Company and the finishing plants that were located in Canton and Ball Ground.

The exhibit will run through May 15 and is located in Suite 140 of the Cherokee County Historic Courthouse.

The museum, which is free and open to the public, is located at 100 North Street in downtown Canton. The museum's hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday.
